In this introduction to the professional behaviours and attitudes that are required by the educational assistant working in agencies or within the school system, students will explore the roles and responsibilities of the educational assistant. Supporting students, working as a member of an interdisciplinary team, and working under the supervision of a teacher will be examined. Emphasis will be on the philosophy and practice of inclusion in an educational setting.

This practicum will provide students with opportunities to make connections between theory and practice by linking their learning with practical, professional experiences in a classroom or community agency. In seminar, the students will extend their understanding of the role of the educational assistant through engaging in reflections, discussions, and learning activities, and explore Indigenous ways being and knowing. Students will also learn about the school board application process and develop a professional portfolio.

This course will provide students with an understanding of the learning processes for literacy, numeracy, and science as they are presented in the Alberta Program of Studies. Students will also examine the developmental stages for literacy, numeracy, and science learning. Practical strategies to support classroom instruction and for adapting instructional materials to meet the needs of students will also be a focus of this course.

This course will examine behaviour and factors that impact behaviour. Strength-based principles and techniques that will support positive behaviour and self-regulation development will be discussed. Students will examine attitudes, skills, and strategies that encourage positive behaviour and support children as they develop self-regulation skills. Constructive, respectful ways to prevent and respond to challenging behaviour will also be explored.

In this course, students will identify and explore the principles of universal design for learning and differentiated instruction. They will learn strategies to differentiate instruction to accommodate differences in language, culture, learning needs, and exceptionalities within the classroom. The course will also address using adaptive and assistive technology resources to support children�s success in the educational setting.

This introductory course focuses on the development of children from birth to adolescence. An ecological approach to physical, brain, social, emotional, and cognitive development will be explored. Students will create developmental profiles to solidify their understanding of development.
