The TEAL 1003 Reading and Writing course focuses on key principles and practices for teaching reading and writing skills to EAL learners. Participants will read current literature and key Canadian Language Benchmarks resources as well as develop materials for teaching reading and writing, create a CLB-referenced Portfolio-based Language Assessment (PBLA) task, and teach micro-lessons. 

TEAL 1003, Reading and Writing, includes 3 modules. The first module focuses attention on teaching literacy skills to beginning learners. The second module focuses on teaching reading skills, and the third module focuses on writing skills. Core concepts for building learners’ reading and writing skills together with key pedagogical principles that focus on a task-based approach will be introduced. Throughout the modules, learner-centered activities, assessment tools and strategies, and selecting effective materials and resources will be explored. Research-based articles as well as other professional resources, including the course textbook, will be used for knowledge building and discussion purposes.
